Why after meals works
Your muscles pull glucose out of the bloodstream for fuel — and they do it whether you're exercising or just walking. Studies comparing walking after meals versus at other times suggest the post-meal window is when a short walk does the most to limit blood sugar spikes.
Benefits beyond blood sugar
Regular walking is also linked with healthier blood pressure, improved cholesterol, and better weight control. It's one of the few health habits where 'more is generally better' and even a modest amount counts.
Make it stick
Tie the walk to something you already do — the phone call after dinner, the podcast after lunch. Comfortable shoes at the door and a family member who joins you make it more likely you'll keep going.
Not a substitute for care
If you have diabetes or prediabetes, keep working with your provider on the full plan — monitoring, medication and nutrition. A walk after meals is a powerful addition, not a replacement.
